- [Creation Notes] The mosque was first commissioned by Valide Sultan Safiye and begun in 1597 by Davut Aga. Davut died in 1599 and was replaced by the architect DalgichAhmet Chavush. Work on the mosque ceased when Sultan Mehmet III died. Later fire destroyed the unfinished mosque. Still later the Valide Sultan Turhan Hadice, mother of Mehmet IV had the mosque rebuilt by the architect Mustafa Aga and the construction wascompleted in 1663.
